Why the Flying Rhino??
Of course, as you might have guessed, were often asked how we came to be called the Flying Rhinos. Surely, there must be a story to accompany that playful logo and whimsical name. While most teams have mascots with names such as The Hornets, Bulls, Jaguars, and Sharks, there must be a reason for calling ourselves the Flying Rhinos. Perhaps it is based in Greek mythology? Maybe it comes from a Disney movie?

Sorry. There's no story. In fact, the founders of the Club aren't sure which came first, the logo or the name. The more widely accepted story goes like this: Once upon a time...(whoops wrong story).

Jeff Noftz was sitting in a restaurant in Moscow, Idaho with an artist/friend discussing the formation of a new cycling team he was organizing when he casually mentioned that he wanted an animal as a mascot. The artist drew a quick sketch of a Rhino riding a bicycle. Jeff said it looked like a Flying Rhino.

The name stuck and with it came a Club that's serious about having fun.

By the way, the quick sketch on a napkin in an Idaho restaurant is the same drawing seen today at cycling events throughout the Midwest.

What's the Name of the Rhino??
Sorry no name has been given to the rhino because we can't tell if it is a him rhino or a her rhino.

So when do we ride??
Mountain bike and road bike rides (of varying degree) are scheduled throughout the week, especially during the riding season. A typical week looks like this, but check the online Ride Calendar for more and specific information:

Depot Park is located in downtown Clarkston. If you need more information call Kinetic Systems Bicycles at (248-625-7000).

Being a club and all, when do you meet??
The FRCC typically meets at 7:00pm on the third Thursday of each month. We combine the November/December meetings (due to the holidays and all) and meet on the first Thursday of December. All meetings are at Kinetic System Bicycles in Clarkston, MI.

How do I join??
Simply fill out a membership form and pay dues of $30 per person, $35 per family.

What does my $30/$35 get me??
Besides membership to the best club in Michigan, you will get:

  • Monthly newsletter that will keep you up to date on all happenings in the cycling world and the FRCC.
  • Discounts on events sponsored by the FRCC.
  • Access to certified coaches/trainers.
  • Access to Tuesday night training at Waterford Hills Raceway.
  • Information on special promotions, trips, rides offered by the FRCC or Kinetic Systems Bicycles.
  • Purchase of official FRCC clothing, exclusively sold at Kinetic Systems Bicycles, everything from hats, jackets, shorts, jerseys, skinsuits, etc..
  • Some one to ride with.
  • and much more...

So I heard about this indoor training thing, can you tell me more??
We sure can!

Typically starting in mid-November and running through March the FRCC holds indoor training sessions on Tuesday nights. Each session starts promptly at 7:00pm and normally lasts for an hour.

A typical session includes:

  • warm-up and stretching
  • strength work on the bike (lower back and abdominal)
  • work on form
  • some (very little) high intensity
  • cool down and stretching

Typically these sessions work on form, correct posture, how to relax on the bike and become more efficient. But you say you are looking to break a good sweat, just come to one session, we guarantee you will.

When you come remember to bring you bike (of course), your trainer (rollers are fine, but a fork stand is required), a towel or two, and water bottles.
