New Multisports Team Captain

Firstly I want to give anybody who has participated, is thinking about participating or has a slight curiosity in multisports events a point of contact. I have met a number of you at the various local races, on a Tuesday night at the track or on one of the group rides but I know there are a lot more people whom I haven’t met. So this is an opportunity to let me know who you are. Secondly I thought it important for you to know who I am, where I came from and what my goals are. So that being said, I joined the Rhino’s in 2009 when I was getting frustrated with a number of running injuries and thought that if I did a little more cross training it would alleviate these issues. After about 10 visits to Kinetics and several conversations with Jeff where he tried to get me to buy a cross bike I finally purchased a road bike and fell in love with it and cycling straight away. For a while all I did was cycle but soon realized that I was missing the running side of life. In 2010 I started to combine the two disciplines and competed in four duathlons where I did quite well coming in the top three in my age group in all of them. At this point I had truly caught the multisport bug. I started watching triathlons on TV and the ones that were most appealing were the ironman races. The total dedication these competitors have and the stories of ordinary people fighting to get through 140.6 miles of an ironman day really struck a chord with me. So much so, that I signed up for one in June the following year (multisport blog). 2011 was my first year in triathlon and it was truly an epic year. I can also tell you that without the support of fellow Rhinos, who answered many of my beginner’s questions, and my ever-patient family, last year would have been a lot harder. There were no medals and a lot of hard work but the multisport bug is alive and well and I am looking forward to 2012. My personal goals are to participate in a race a month, improve my swimming and continue to get faster on my bike while conserving enough energy for a good run. I will support any Rhino that wants to get involved to the best of my ability. Whether it’s help with training, race nutrition, transitions, etc I will do my best to help.
For a couple of reasons I wanted to write a note introducing myself, Simon Lynch, as the new Multisports Team Captain:
My goals for the team are to grow our numbers, grow as a team and improve our multisports training. A number of people have suggested doing some brick workouts (cycling and then running or swimming, cycling and running all in one workout) that incorporate the Saturday or Sunday group rides. I think this is a great idea and plan on putting this into action. When the water warms up I will also plan some swim training sessions at a local lake. I will post details in the Multisports blog, as they become available. Please feel free to email me (frccmultiteam@gmail.com) with any other suggestions you may have.
There are two races that stand out as "must do’s" for any Rhino multisport team member whether a seasoned veteran or an absolute beginner making a multisport debut. These are the Big Fish Triathlon / Duathlon (click here for details) and the Village Tri / Du (formerly known as the Craig Greenfield click here for details). Both have tri and du events and have great local support. With the season fast approaching now is the time to start laying the foundation for a successful season so I hope you have been out running or biking enjoying this unseasonably wonderful weather.
From this point I will start posting anything of interest in the multisports blog so please make sure that you are subscribed to it so you don’t miss anything. Hope to see you out there soon!
